Its been awhile since Ive had anything to say, but Im here, about to preach, after witnessing a act that bothers me as I wake the next day! As parents, your job is to love your kids and try to provide the best experiences possible for them. When it comes to youth sports there is a lot a child can gain from participating (from the beginning through High School) however, too many parents seem to lose all notion of what is best for their child. The words and negative behavior by parents that lose their minds, wanting the star player to be their child, floors me! I know most of the time it is their love and want for their kid, that makes a parent lose their mind, but come on! Always check your wants at the door / gate parents, cheer for your son or daughters team through every strike out or error, realizes young children are just figuring out the game, growing in their belief of themselves is what will help them one day excel, at whatever it is they choose as a passion in their life. Your responses are truly what they focus on, as they have since birth. Put yourself inside your son or daughters body and hear a statement like You should be ashamed of your self after screwing up on the field. for the first time they hear that they have failed you, is that the experience you seek for your kid? Its been a long time since Ive been around a baseball field, as my son didnt play baseball, he played other sports and now is grown. The majority of parents are great, they should cheer more!, but maybe experiences like this has caused them to sit on their hands in silence, I dont know! Ive seen this at the high school level, having been a high school football coach for almost ten years. Ive seen kids who simply want to be part of something very special, part of the team, have it ruined, because a parent comes to the dinner table and asks why are you not a starter! seen many young men walk away and miss out on just that! Ive also seen many excel! Why?, well for one, they never have to live in fear of what might come out of their parents mouth when they have screwed up a play, they never question whats important to their parents! Those are the kids who excel, maybe its not in sports, maybe its some different. What I know for sure is how good it feels to hear from a former player who is excelling in life! Hearing them say the experiences they had while involved has help them excel and overcome lifes many issues! So bottom line is, think before spewing your disappointment at a game thats simply there for fun and to help your child grow in more way than you can ever imagine!
