Its been exactly 4 months since nationals & Im working hard to bring an even bigger and better package to the stage this year! Today marks my first high carb day in my new diet where I will be experimenting with carb cycling. I just completed my 1 month of keto diet and learned a lot, but will leave it as a variable to play with closer to contest as I have always dieted that way in the past! A lot of people have been asking me about how the keto experiment went and saying they could just NEVER do a low carb diet- but really anyone can and the majority of people will feel decent on it, if its done RIGHT! I swapped my calories out exactly, simply replacing my carbs for fats to ensure I was still in a caloric surplus and had ample fats to use as energy, but kept my carbs below 20 g a day to ensure that my body was forced to use fats as fuel instead of carbs. If you keep carbs in, but at a low-moderate level (as opposed to essentially non-existant) its likely you will feel worse than if on no carbs at all, as your body is trying to run off of a small amount of fuel in the form of carbs, as opposed to being able to switch energy systems completely and run off of a large amount of fuel in the form of fats. The in between zone is often where people feel foggy & have that low carb feel in my experience, but if done properly it can be a great alternative to the traditional high carb diet. I found that I kept my strength, increasing certain lifts even, but had less endurance when it came to high volume training, & although I leaned out slightly (despite eating the same amount of calories), my look was worse as my muscles were flat and depleted of glycogen! To continue experimenting I will be carb cycling with 2 low carb days (1 carb meal pre-workout) and 1 high carb day (5 carb meals) to see how my body and metabolism reacts. So far after meal #2 of my first high carb day I feel FULL- definitely not used to this volume!
