Its been over half a decade since the short, weird, half-season - TopicsExpress

Its been over half a decade since the short, weird, half-season run of The Middleman. I just bought the box set on amazon and started rewatching it, and ive got to be honest: it hasnt aged well. Its campy. Its dorky. Its silly as hell, and the production values are even worse than i remember. Its perfect. If you were never in the know about this show (and why would you have been?) it ran on ABC family for 13 episodes during the summer of 2008. The network didnt really know what to do with it. It was an over-the-top collection of ludicrously high-concept sci-fi plots layered on a rich bed of pop culture references, propped up with sorkin-esque snappy dialogue and full of charming if sometimes wooden performances. It lived and died on a shoe-string budget, but somehow managed to make terrible production values its thing - embraced bad CG and plastic looking props and made them its own, a part of the feel and the heart of the world. It was strange and nonsense and beautiful. Its probably my favorite show from that era. It wasnt a perfect show, but it was brave in its weirdo dont-give-a-shit-what-people-think-of-us joyful exuberance. I feel like a lot of shows were back then. I kind of miss that. https://youtube/watch?v=qmyj9h3U_xo
