Its common practice for black women to act like stuff (especially persunal shit) dont bother them. I understand it. Its a defense mechanism to keep it together, to not let yourself fall apart into a billion pieces that have shattered under the weight of oppression, heartache, abuse and poverty. However, there is power in truth. I daresay that it is the only power that we truly have. These defense mechanisms keep us alive. I understand. But strength isnt demonstrated by how much shit you can take. contrary to what people think it is. Strength is feeding the flame that the world tries to blow out with your dreams, vision and action. Protecting that flame and honoring the truth of who you are with everything you do. It also means being gentle with yourself. It means that you hold those vulnerable places within you with tenderness and care. It means that you use the strength that you have to hold those places to the light and refuse to diminish the parts of yourself that others see as unseemly. It means that you use your strength to speak the truth of those places in yourself as well.
