Its difficult to write about war and the events in the Middle East. I recognize that I dont understand the frustration, despair, terror, anger, etc that can lead people to hate each other and commit acts of violence. I dont understand the global politics, finance, economics that are involved. But I do believe that the vast majority of people -- in Iraq, in Syria, in Palestine, in Israel, in Egypt -- are good people, sometimes caught in terrible circumstances. I think the characters we hear about in the news -- the politicians, the militants, the religious leaders -- are only a small, distorted picture of whats really happening. I struggle to know what to do about the tragedies I hear about around the world, and about the problems I see in my own life, city, country, etc. There is much joy and much pain in the world.
