Its early in the morning as I sit in a chair, drinking a cup of coffee, and looking at what most people say are the ugliest part of their body. One quick glance at my bare feet and I would have to agree. I could cover them by putting on a pair of shoes which are still laying where I removed them last night. But it is more relaxing and comfortable to be shoeless when lounging around the house. Later this morning I have an appointment to meet with a friend for breakfast and Im quite certain we will both be wearing shoes. But for now in spite of my feet being so ugly I prefer being barefoot and relaxed. Moses was a sheepherder at the time when he had an unforgettable encounter with God at the burning bush. What he saw stopped him in his tracks. As he stood watching a bush that was not being burned by the fire he heard a voice say to him, Take off your shoes for you are standing on holy ground.. There are so many lessons to be learned from that story. First, a holy God requires that we be holy. Ill let you use your imagination as to what might be on the bottom of a sheepherders sandals. Removing the filthy shoes serve as a reminder of God removing the filth from our lives by the cleansing blood of the Lamb. Second, God loves us in spite of our ugliness. Its not just our feet that is the problem. Ive heard the expression about being Coyote ugly. When I look at others as well as seeing myself in the mirror of Gods word Im reminded that none of Gods creatures can act as ugly as those who were made in His image. And yet in spite of our ugliness caused by sin God still loves us. Third, God wanted Moses to stop whatever he was doing to linger long in His presence. Moses, I know you have WOR to do taking care of all those sheep and Im going t give you even more work. You will be wearing shoes when you go into the palace to confront Pharaoh and you will certainly need shoes as you lead the people across the hot burning sands. But for now leave your shoes off as you spend time in my presence.. Ah, Monday morning. The beginning of a new week. Gotta get the kids up for school. Gotta go back to the work grind. There are so many things I need to do. Dont know how Im gonna get it all accomplished. Stop. Wait. Dont put your shoes on before relaxing and being refreshed in His presence. Those few moments spent with God will be time well spent. #woodswitandwisdom
