Its estimated that about 14,000 new cases of transverse myelitis surface each year in the United States. Yet there are even fewer cases of local college athletes who find the strength to walk again, after diagnosis. I started to feel like numbness in my feet. Everything went numb and then it just reached about the center of my back and I just felt a lot of pain, said 22-year-old Morningside College student David Meisinger. Transverse Myelitis is a neurological condition resulting from inflammation affecting the spinal cord. Often the first sign is a sudden lower back pain, followed by muscle weakness in the arms and legs. In 2011, David was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis. Three years ago, I was really scared. My first thought was what am I going to tell coach when I miss practice tonight, said Meisinger. David went from being an active, competitive collegiate soccer athlete to walking with crutches. But over the course of numerous rehabilitation visits, David persisted, saying he made “amazing” progress thanks to his friends at CNOS. siouxlandnews/story/27520749/cnos-patient-and-local-student-athlete-learns-to-walk-again
