Its fascinating collecting something that has no current collector value and is of little interest to anyone but which you know to be remarkable (and rapidly vanishing) cultural and historical artifacts. These guys lack the Made in Japan or Made in Occupied Japan stamp or label on the bottom, since there is no bottom. There was probably a cardboard/felt base thats long vanished. Still, nothing like this, of this obvious vintage, and of this dime-store quality, came from anywhere other than Japan. Picked up two more Made in Japan-stamped Rococo figurines too. Antique dealers are so baffled by these figurines they call them Victorian or Colonial. Id call them Rosenkavalier figurines as they were part of the early-to-mid 20th Century nostalgia for a vaguely-grasped 18th Century overblown elegance (mostly of the Rococo era), of which the 20th Century anachronism-stuffed opera, Der Rosenkavalier was an expression. Movie still is from the 1938 film, Marie Antoinette. Period painting (1760) is by Fragonard.
