Its fascinating to me that the many people in this group whose raisonne detre appears to be debunking the value of the Tanakh insist on reading it as literally as any haredi, and refuse to acknowledge that those of us who do find value in it do not necessarily consider it to be divinely inspired by/written by God. Ironic, no? They will only accept the premises of the literalists because those in fact are the only premises that allow them to construct a straw man that is then very easy to knock down. If they were to acknowledge that the text has many layers and many meanings, they would have a much harder case to make--perhaps an impossible one.
