Its funny, isnt it? And, according to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the inverse is also true. The first step, according to the great teachers, is to become aware of your thoughts. Then, slowly, you begin to recognize them for what they are. Sometimes they are a sort of echo from the past, at least thats what it feels like to me. But you can begin to redirect them - not to actually stop all thinking exactly - but to recognize the thoughts that might not be serving you anymore and then redirecting them.
