Its funny that I was having a similar discussion about this with Lady Staba the other day upon reminiscing about our favorite older animes and buying our first DVDs/VHS of it. I remember saving up money to buy my first complete series (Outlaw Star) for $100 back in high school because that was the only series I liked and was able to afford. Ironically this set now goes for $800 on Amazon (WTF?!)! Of course I wanted to buy more titles at the magical Suncoast Records store, the only place I COULD by anime in the late 90s early 2000s, but I just couldnt afford it. Similar to the author of this article, I was introduced to anime in middle school when Toonami was just starting out so my knowledge of anime was limited, yet I always wanted to watch more. I would watch those free DVDs with samples animes on it that came in magazines over and over. I do admit since it was so, so hard to get anime legally (Suncoast was the only one selling, no video place rented it, and I was the soul friend in my group who actually owned anything) that I downloaded a lot of stuff. Even after I started making friends via the cosplay and convention scenes it was still crazy expensive and difficult to get a hold of new titles so we passed around our VHSs, DVDs and external drives just so we could watch more anime. Its amazing now that I have three different places I can watch anime with a click of a button in BOTH subs and dubs. No more waiting weeks on sketchy fan subs, and years on maybe getting a dub. If I want to recommend a title to someone, I can send them a link to the streaming title on Crunchyroll. I can safely admit Ive tried more new anime titles in the last two years than I ever did in my early fan years. What a glorious time to be an anime fan! media.goboiano/original/1911-the-struggles-new-generation-anime-fans-will-never-understand
