Its funny to watch all the Facebook posts about Valentines day/Singles awareness day/Anna Howard Shaw day (thank you Tina Fey). Honestly, whether you are single or in a relationship, Valentines should be about love and a light-hearted day to show a gesture of love to someone. (I know, I know, just like Christmas is supposed to be about presen--family...yeah, family.) But seriously, when I was single, I always thought how nice it would be to have someone on Valentines. But being in a relationship inst about having someone on arbitrary special days (which have, yes, been largely commandeered by commercial interests in fueling consumerism); its about two people making each other better every day of the year (or at least on the whole). So to all my single friends out there, if you feel lonely or jaded, stop it. I send you my love and wish you the love of all your friends (and maybe a random stranger.) To my coupled, throupled, and more friends, I also send you my love, wish you the love of your friends, and hope that you are grateful to have someone(s) in your life that truly complements your existence and that you let him/her/them know what he/she/they mean(s) to you every day, not just today. (I think that sentence is proof that love is complicated.) And to my own year-round love, Seth Fornea, I love waking up to you every day and love our life together. And I wont make you brownies, even though I really really want to! Happy Valentines day!
