Its hard to believe that 15 years ago today, Bellingham was forever changed. On June 10, 1999, gasoline from a leaking pipeline running through Whatcom Falls Park was ignited and exploded, killing two young boys and a young man, and leaving a wake of destruction in its path. We will not forget how this day changed our community, how leaders and parents of the victims rose above the pain to form a pipeline safety advocacy organization -- first Safe Bellingham as a program of RE Sources, and then the Pipeline Safety Trust -- to create tougher rules to save other communities from experiencing similar tragedies.
