Its in the past, when are you going to get over it? Hmmm those words - in the context of why we as South Africans cannot get over apartheid grinds me in places i really cant grind or mention ... Only someone who hasnt experienced apartheid or researched apartheid or maybe someone whose ancestors came up with the concept would be so insensitive to utter those words. Many will say yes but its been 21 years ... yeah ... and ... so a whole nation of scarred people, some who still dont know what happened to their families after disappearing into a police cell, should just move on. Ok, breathe, sigh, to give people the benefit of the doubt I am gonna mention just a few things that apartheid meant to the non-whites of this gorgeous country. Non-whites were not allowed to be citizens of the land of their birth (ja remember pass laws). Non-whites were limited to bantu education - a system designed to oppress for generations to come as non-whites were only allowed to hold lesser jobs - ma-nage-ment (in my best Trevor voice) - was never on the cards. School facilities between the white schools and the other schools are still vastly different. You wonder why Eskom cant handle the load of the country - the system was never initially designed to cater for the masses having access to electricity (whether you like to think of it or not) ... not saying that we shouldnt be making provision alot faster than we are but yes - the current situation is what it is. Land was taken away - just like that - people were evicted from their homes, their heritage, their cultures not taken into account (refer district 6) Non-white school kids knew what teargas was, they knew to put a wet facecloth over their faces, they knew what the riot police looked like - in fact to me a Casper is a riot vehicle and not one of the most popular rappers in SA at the moment. You wonder if there are still scars? Of course there are still scars - to forgive is one thing - to forget another ... Do you think apartheid gave whites a head start ?... of course it did - there were opportunities that non-whites were not afforded - they had to leave the country to get the education, the opportunities to take up a sporting careers - to be part of a national team for anything - and not the coloured or black or indian team ... Something as simple as being a train driver for transnet was not something that was easily achieved - if there was a white person who could be in that position - then they would always have preference. Do you not think our grandmothers missed their homes after they were forcefully removed, do you not think they wondered how their children died, were they in pain, what were their last words ... of course they did .... Did we get over it ... NO - life carried on but as a nation - NO we did not get over it ... I think we might one day - but we not there yet - and when hatred comes from the previously advantaged i have to ask - why exactly are you full of hate? Because service delivery isnt on par - ag sorry man - next time we will all take the scraps and make sure that your roads are perfect and that you never have load shedding, and that you never have to wait in a queue because we will just create special queues just for you ... Oh wait - thats what used to happen - so I see why you would have an issue now! Anyway - the point is - no - we havent moved on - and why? Because Apartheid was a terrible injustice to most people in this country and no we will never go back to that. To move on - we have to start accepting that we all have the same rights, we all have the same responsibilities and we all have the same desire to see our children succeed. Should we stop hating - yes - hatred is always a bad emotion. But please do not insult anyones intelligence by saying - you should be over it? And just so we clear - none and I do mean none of the political parties in this country have done enough to ensure that we ever get to that point...but please lets work together to create a brighter future because the day we actually realise that no person is better than any other person based on colour, religion, gender or even finances ... whats important is whats in your heart!
