Its interesting how seeing something up close has such a strong impact on how seriously people treat the situation. Before, there was footage of Rice dragging his unconscious fiance from an elevator after a violent altercation. Now that theres footage of him hitting her, a two game suspension and support from his team has become an indefinite suspension and being cut by the team (way more appropriate, IMO). But what new information was learned from the video? What previously held theory or account of what happened in the elevator was discredited by the video? Should a violent crime thats captured on film prompt steeper punishments simply because its hard to watch? I think this is becoming an increasingly important question with how ubiquitous recording devices have become and the ability of media, law enforcement, etc. to time and control the release of video.
