Its interesting to read these lines in this review ...everything must be measured against Voodoo, a dense, relentlessly groovy record which came out in 2000, managing to both spawn hits and please critics. Voodoo isn’t just the finest album of the neo-soul movement, it’s one of the landmark R&B records of the last two decades. I remember Voodoo coming out and almost everyone hating it because they just wanted him to put out Brown Sugar again and again and again. After the release of Voodoo came the arrest, the rehab, the weight gain, the jokes, the fall. I know they cant wait till ya outta ya deal! Look how they did DAngelo ask em how do it feel! - Kanye West So how apropos for man so crucified to drop an album called Black Messiah. I must say after a couple of listens to Black Messiah Im messing with it heavily. I think what hes done is definitely given people time to forget Brown Sugar, maybe just barely recall Voodoo; and so this album will be judged by its own merits. In the follow the leader world we live in (I cant tell the difference between a song by Usher, Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Jeremih, August Alsina, etc etc etc) its refreshing to hear a musician thats moving in the path plotted by his own internal artistic compass. Hes not trying to turn up or give you that thing you think you want. Hes not trying to give you stripper anthems and disposable music you wont remember a month from now. DAngelo has given you the album you need from him and that he needs for himself. Hes given you an album hell be proud to walk on stage and perform songs from tomorrow and all of the tomorrows after. msn/en-us/music/news/dangelos-black-messiah-album-finally-drops-first-listen/ar-BBgOzsQ?srcref=rss
