Its interesting watching CBC personalities starting to take swipes. Did they always hold a contempt for him, or are they just riding the trend? Rex Murphy does make a great point about Jians celebrity. I know that when I went to unlike Jians Facebook page, I couldnt, because Id never liked it to begin with. Ive always been an unabashed George Strombo fan, and used to get ridiculed by Jian fans because of it. George had always been my favourite young MuchMusic VJ (and by young I mean younger than Erica Ehm, Steve Anthony and Michael Williams) because he was the only one who actually seemed to know and care about the artists he was interviewing. But I wasnt even aware George was on CBC until one night I was sitting in 21 King for dinner. It was the night before Mike Harris was to take the stand at the Ipperwash Inquiry and suddenly, playing on all the TVs, was THE BEST Ipperwash segment Ive ever seen. Sam George and I looked at each other and concluded that it was pretty alright (which was Sams way of saying it was awesome). And from then on I was hooked on The Hour. Because after that I realized that George was one of the only people (if not THE only person) to advocate for First Nations issues in the mainstream media. Consistently. And it wasnt just First Nations - it was anyone who was a have not. Jian, on the other hand, never seemed to do that - at least not in a way that ever resonated with me. Which, I guess, is exactly what Rex Murphy is pointing out in this video. Some people use their celebrity for good, and others use it as a way to build themselves onto a perch so high that others find glee in seeing them knocked off of it. youtube/watch?v=4MVs4mdYcD4
