Its kind of interesting to look back at songs you grew up listening to with a more introspective view. I was just watching Tavis Smiley interview Annie Lennox and she was talking about covering Billie Holidays Strange Fruit (based on a poem from 1937), which Siouxsie & the Banshees covered on Through the Looking Glass. Back in the 80s, I didnt realize the significance of that song and how haunting the lyrics (about the lynchings of African Americans in the South) are. Simply brilliant: Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swingin in the Southern breeze Strange fruit hangin from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant South The bulgin eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burnin flesh Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop
