Its long been a open secret in my family (fathers side) which they called the Russian affair that Tsar Alexander III fathered illegitimate twin girls by the wife of the then British Ambassador to St Petersburg. Of course, being illegitimate there was no legal recognition of their paternity for obvious reasons, and Michael Ward (the Ambassador) brought the girls up under his name. They were known as the Ward sisters. One of the sisters eventually married my great grandfather Jim Bevan and between them they had 14 children, of whom my Grandfather Gerald was one. Therefore I find it fascinating that by blood, I am the the great great granddaughter of Tsar Alexander III. I have no idea how to go about tracing this connection. Is anyone out there brilliant at genealogy who could advise me where to start looking? Maybe that Faberge egg actually should belong to me????
