Its municipal election day in BC. In Nanaimo you can vote at: Chase River Elementary School, 1503 Cranberry Avenue City of Nanaimo Service & Resource Centre, 411 Dunsmuir Street Departure Bay Activity Centre, 1415 Wingrove Street Frank J. Ney Elementary School, 5301 Williamson Road Georgia Avenue Community School, 625 Georgia Avenue McGirr Elementary School, 6199 McGirr Road Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, 741 Third Street Nanaimo Alliance Church, 1609 Meredith Road Oliver Woods Community Centre, 6000 Oliver Road Protection Island Fire Hall, 26 Pirates Lane (Hours 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) Wellington Community Hall, 3922 Corunna Avenue Information on the majority of the candidates running can be found at: election2014.civicinfo.bc.ca/2014/index.asp In Nanaimo you can vote for up to 1 mayor, 8 councillors, and 9 school district trustees. You do not need to vote for the maximum and in fact it is bad to vote for a candidate you are unsure of as you may end up electing them rather than someone you are sure you want in office. In civic elections both residents and landowners get a vote. You can bet the land developers are voting. If you want the city to get back on track with Plan Nanaimo and moving towards dense, diverse, walkable, bikeable neighbourhoods instead of huge tracts of single family detached sprawl punctuated by isolated condos and big-box stores, get out and vote. Remember, there are 9 seats in council (including Mayor) and 9 on the school board, so its OK to vote for someone you think is an important voice to have on council even if they arent 100% the sort of candidate you usually vote for. Also, remember: its about who you want to run the city, not about who you like personally. I am facebook friends with one of the candidates because we share a hobby and vocation, but I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT HIM ON COUNCIL. This is not because hes a horrible person, but because he has repeatedly demonstrated that he strongly and dogmatically holds to public policy that I disagree with on multiple issues. By watching the key talking points a candidate uses you can usually get a sense of what theyre not really saying about what they stand for. But if you havent already made up your mind its a bit late for that, so you are stuck with other peoples judgement and endorsement lists. That said, here are my picks: Mayor Bill Holdom Councillors Gordon Fuller Karen Hovstad Wendy Pratt Fred Patje Jim Kip Jack Arnold SD68 Trustee Tania Brzovic Mark Robinson Sharon Welch Nelson Allen Stephanie Higginson
