Its my moms birthday this week, and she found out this morning - TopicsExpress

Its my moms birthday this week, and she found out this morning that her dog Winnie has cancer. My mom and dad are taking her to be put down this afternoon. I found Winnie in Dallas at my old house in Wynwood (hence her name). My ex and I had noticed this black thing creeping around our property, but we never could catch it long enough to get a good look at it. We thought it was a cat. One day I walked out to the garage and found this emaciated, matted up thing shivering under our SUV. Finally it came to me and I saw it was a dog. She had terrible mange and bloody paws and had apparently been beaten by someone and left outside to starve. Somehow she made her way to our house and was living under our car for heat as the winter set in. Over the next few months, I had her wounds fixed and gave her daily baths to get rid of the mange. I wanted to keep her, but my ex wouldnt have it, so we drove her to an animal shelter. In the end, I couldnt hand her over to them. I called my mom and begged her to take Winnie. Even though they already had four dogs, she said yes. My mom and dad have given her a wonderful home for 11 years. Weve never known exactly how old she was or WHAT she was -- shes a big, ol wooly black thing. Someone once said she was an Australian Shepherd, but who knows? She had the sweetest disposition, but could also be fiery and leery toward strangers. She has been my dads faithful companion for the past few years since their other dogs have died. Given their age, she will probably be their last dog. My heart is breaking for my parents. I wish I was there with them right now. I know I said only positive posts, but I had to get this out. Heres something positive: to love and be loved by a dog is to know what unconditional love is. Adopt a dog, save a dog. They save you in return. RIP Winnie.
