Its nearly 2:30am and I cant sleep, not for a lack of being tired, not because my mind wont shut off, instead because Im filled with incredible joy reflecting on the events which occurred last week. Over the past 3-4 days Ive seen The BJJ community unite in a way I have rarely ever seen in other sports or in my 27 plus years around various martial arts, to support Jeremy Montes Jr. In his valiant battle with leukemia! Last week I witnessed and was blessed to be a part of an auction in the Shoyoroll Trade or Sell group to raise funds to be donated for Jer which was started by Shoyoroll owner Bear Quitugua and inspired by Anthony Mitchell. The level of love and support was mind blowing with $5,000 raised in the initial auction and another $5,000 plus being raised due to subsequent donations inspired by the auction. Thats over $10,000 raised in a matter of hours, due to the love and overwhelming support of numerous amazing human beings all united for this cause! Tonight I witnessed yet another round of unity and compassion fueled by my friend Rich McKeegan auctioning off some of his own gear along with others donating Shoyoroll uniforms and gear. I couldnt help but to get in on the action and auctioned one of my rarest uniforms. Im happy to say we raised nearly $5,000 tonight alone! Along with our efforts many schools have hosted open mat fund raisers, auctions, and other events to support Jer in his fight! Weve also all donned symbolic orange stripes on our belts in support of Jer and his family. Ive always said there is something unique and special about the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community and the individuals within that cannot be put into words, for me the actions of last week combined with the continued efforts of everyone involved have cemented that statement in my mind.
