Its night 22 of The Reed theaters 25 Days of Bond Christmas marathon, as we settle into the home stretch with 2002s Die Another Day. Its the 20th official James Bond film, and marks the 40th anniversary of the film franchise (dating back to 1962s Dr. No). Watch for several tips of the hat to the history of the series, including items in Qs laboratory, as well as a quip from Q about Bonds new watch being his 20th. The story centers around Bond first being captured, then working to redeem himself by finding his betrayer. Pierce Brosnan is back for his fourth and final outing as 007. Halle Berry is the Bond girl for this one, as she portrays NSA agent Jinx Johnson (watch for her tip of the hat to the first Bond girl, Ursula Andress). Toby Stephens is the baddie, Gustav Graves, with Rick Yune as his heavy, Zao. With the passing of Desmond Llewelyn in a tragic traffic accident in 1999, John Cleese steps up into the role of the crotchety quartermaster. It seemed to be a promising notion, but lasted only for this outing, as the next film would be a prequel to the series. The theme for the film, Die Another Day, was performed by Madonna. It would reach to No. 8 on the US charts. The opening credit sequence was the first in the series to carry the plot forward, showing Bond being tortured. As opposed to other Bond films, this one relies heavily on CGI for its stunt sequences, and would draw the ire of fans and critics as a result. Die Another Day hit cinemas on Nov. 20, 2002.
