Its no secret I love Pacific Rim. One of the best movies this year, I believe. You might disagree. Thats cool. But I wonder at how often films like this get stuck in that impossible nether realm between serious film and dumb popcorn flicks. If the film is as simplistic as expected, people call it fluff. If it attempts any sort of serious character arc, it gets labeled as too complicated for fluff. I can relate to that because I am a guy who writes about space squids and Minotaur women, hoping they will be seen as more than just empty goofiness. It is often a futile effort.
