Its not my fault! Genesis 3:(selected verses) ...Its only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die. You wont die! the serpent replied to the woman. God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil. The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. Then the Lord God called to the man, Where are you? He replied, I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked. Who told you that you were naked? the Lord God asked. Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat? The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” … I spent twenty six years in the merchant marines. In all that time I really only had three people who I considered to be my bosses. Of course there were a number of people who had authority over me, but there were really only three who had the ability to impact my career. To me, one of the many signs of a great boss is his (or her) willingness to stand in the gap. It seems that in every company, or organization, people refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions. When questioned or when something goes wrong, most people start blaming someone else immediately. For most of the years I worked I was responsible for the handling of the cargo, which was millions of gallons of oil products. It was my responsibility to plan, load, protect the integrity of, and discharge safely. I remember one episode where the contract department had signed a long term agreement with a major oil company but they committed to quantity based on volume, not weight. A glass may hold a pint, but will that glass float when full is another matter all together. Without going into a lot of boring details, our company was losing revenue on each load because the contract department made a mistake. Turned out, for the first couple of loads, they had simply blamed me. But after several short loads I was called into the office and grilled over this problem by the executive management and contract department. After a lengthy interrogation, they were getting a little frustrated because I refused to accept the blame but I also refused to identify the problem, although by then I had it figured out. I wasnt going to do to the contract guys what they were trying to do to me. I simply replied I am loading the maximum cargo we can handle safely and in proper trim. Then my direct supervisor came in. He looked over all the paperwork, he studied the computer printouts and he listened to them accuse me of improper calculations. He looked at me and asked, well? I shrugged and said, its all right there. He smiled and turned to the contract and revenue people sitting there and said, hes right, youre wrong! The significance of that smile was he was pleased that I didnt make any excuses or try to blame someone. There have been plenty of times when I did things wrong, in my job and in my life. When I messed up in my job, I tried to just admit it and deal with the consequences, not look for someone to blame. When you or I mess up in life, we need to confess it and ask for mercy and grace, not try to blame someone or make excuses. Excuses to God, really? I cant help but wonder what might have happened if Adam had confessed and asked for mercy rather than blame his wife. Think about it and have a great day. Its all about Jesus!
