Its not often that you see a classical orchestra seated informally - TopicsExpress

Its not often that you see a classical orchestra seated informally in a circle, with the Conductor standing among them, and sometimes, even sitting amidst them! But globally renowned Conductor Sir Roger Norrington and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra used intimacy and informality to cull out the purest of Mozart and Beethoven rhythms,in a concert that will not be easily forgotten. While most of the orchestra members seemed masters of their craft, both in age and virtuosity ,there was the perky,24-year-old Beethoven-prodigy from SKorea, HJ Lim,whose piano-play was pure genius (even if her back was to the audience-yet another untraditional arrangement.) To top it all,was Sir Norringtons sense of humour, which was pure enjoyment.Whether he made tongue-in cheek comments about the pianist,or about Mozart,or winked at the audience, that did not take away from the fact that his finger personally controlled every player in the ensemble. Which was why every member of the 30-strong orchestra created his own individual waves. Indeed, the sound, style, and seating that Norrington spoke about, was rare and unique. Swiss Ambassador HE Christine Schraner Burgener, was as full of smiles,as all of us,at the end of the marvellous concert (Pic 5).
