Its not often that you take a moment to think about the social proceedings undergone by someone with a disability, with an obvious physical impairment, someone who wears a burka, or a kippah, someone who is missing a limb or walks differently. Today my feet were swollen and blistered from walking around in my new $5 sandals. Naturally, yet apprehensively i took them off and walked bare foot around the city. Not surprisingly this resulted in a lot of stares from the general public. How dirty and rude i am, to not wear shoes and travel on public transport. How dare I. I should suffer in silence rather than cause discomfort in others who have to sit on the same train and walk on the same footpath as me. How dare people have a disability and leave the house. How dare people with religious beliefs make this known in public spaces. How dare someone be physically impaired and make others feel uncomfortable when this impairment is so blatant. You know what, how dare we be so self consumed that we can only obsess over fitting into an idea of what is normal, when it is more normal to be different.
