Its not that The Babadook is a terrific horror movie (it really isnt), its that its a terrific movie, period. Imagine a horror film co-written by Virginia Woolf and Charlotte Perkins-Gilman. I loved it. And Essie Davis, who also plays the sublime Phryne Fisher in the terrific series of the same name, gives one of the best performances of the year. Jennifer Kent is enormously gifted—her work here reminds me of the young Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock especially.) Id say that only a woman could have directed this film, but I DO love Neil Marshalls all-gal The Descent, too. No—maybe I AM right: no-one but a woman could have brought the kind of sympathy and delicacy to this sort of material. I cant recommend it highly enough.
