Its not veterans day. Its not the 4th of July. But a friend just posted something and it got me thinking. It got me thinking about our heroes. No, Im not talking about Spiderman or Superman or the Hulk. Im not even talking about the athletes that we idolize and treat like gods among men and shower with money. Im talking about the men and women that shed blood sweat and tears for you and me every day. Im talking about our veterans, our active duty military, National Guard, First Responders and anyone who has ever served in these capacities. We owe these people our respect and, at times, our lives. Your safety and freedom and mine isnt free. Its costly. Its paid for by the blood sweat and tears of our men, and the loneliness of a committed, strong woman waiting for her hero to return. Its paid for by little boys whose Daddy is fighting so he cant be there to see him catch his first ball in little league, or the little girl who cant giggle and snuggle with her Daddy at bed time because he is far away in the sand paying the price for his family and for mine...and for yours. Its paid for by those who race to our aid when we call 911 and by the men and women who live without wives and husbands, fathers and mothers because their dedication to our society and our wellbeing was more important than their safety. And its really, REALLY messed up that they are all paid so little. If youre reading this and youre in this group, I want you to know that there are people that appreciate you. Im one of them. Thank you for being real heroes. The ones that arent recognized. The men and women that do whats needed when others cower and run...for being the people that run TOWARD the fires, toward the gunfire, toward the screaming, embracing the chaos and transforming it instead of running. We owe you more as a society than most realize. For that, Im sorry. America doesnt deserve you at times. Thank you for doing what you do in spite of us.
