Its odd living in the South where the dictatorships of Family and Place still persist. Because I think for many people, especially those whose lives center around artistic and intellectual pursuits, we are living in a time when home has less to do with geography and more to do with the community of ideas. There are times when deeply involved in a discussion on Facebook I feel more at home than in any place Ive ever lived. Partially this might be because Ive straddled two worlds all my life, raised from essentially a working class perspective but thrust into a world of ideas inhabited by people from a much higher socio-economic status. I never really felt I belonged anywhere, not fully. Not to any place, not to any group. It took me a long time to figure out there was no place that was going to feel like home for me, that my home was the interior geography of my self, and thats what I needed to learn about, learn to be comfortable with - thats the place I needed to settle. Every place else is merely a choice of landscape.
