Its official. Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 26, 2014 Oshawa Have You Heard? The election for Mayor is ramping up to be the political race to watch in Oshawa. This Monday, a serious new contender registered for the Office of the Mayor; an individual who is action oriented and a dedicated community champion. Indeed, this is someone who has solid business experience and a strong passion for improving Oshawa; a community leader who inspires others and who is genuinely committed to giving voice to citizen engagement for the successful renewal of Oshawa - a renewal that benefits current citizens, stakeholders and future generations. Yes, it’s Rosemary McConkey. ‘Change Requires Action’ is McConkeys motto, as she calls on the people of Oshawa to help bring needed change in leadership, one vote at a time. Anyone familiar with Oshawa knows McConkey has been extremely involved in local and regional politics. Her positive and proactive approach demonstrates well her belief that, “a vital city requires civic engagement” and “involved citizens are the key to a successful renewal for Oshawa.” McConkey believes the time to correct the leadership problem at City Hall and improve the transparency and accountability of municipal government is now, particularly as Oshawa citizens deserve: • responsive local government • leadership that respects citizens • sound use of public funds • a leader dedicated to the community McConkey has proven she is not afraid to work hard and is successful at reaching out and encouraging people to work together. Strongly motivated to better where she lives, works, and raises her family, here are some of the issues in Oshawa she has taken action on: • organized public meetings, a sign campaign and a bus rally to Queens Park to lobby Kathleen Wynne and Christine Elliott for the extension of Hwy 407E beyond Simcoe Street RESULT: 407E extended an additional 7 kilometres east to Harmony Road • made numerous delegations to Region Council and organized public rallies to ensure public safety at the dangerous Ritson-Winchester intersection was made a priority. RESULT: Road reconstruction and traffic lights installed at Ritson and Winchester • campaigned to have both City and Regional meetings web-streamed, allowing even housebound residents to see the meetings. RESULT: Meetings are now web-streamed and archived • organized the ‘Council on a Diet’ fundraiser involving politicians from across the Region with proceeds to Feed the Need in Durham. RESULT: $10,000 raised for the local food bank charity • launched and ran an essay/speech competition ‘Local Look Back’ engaging both school boards and municipal councils to bring students into local Council Chambers to present their essays and learn more about their community’s past and local governance. RESULT: Enthusiastic youth engagement • request to have Committee of Adjustment meeting agendas and minutes made public on the city website. RESULT: C of A agendas and minutes are now online • request to have a record of past Oshawa Mayors on the City web page. RESULT: Historical record of past Mayors is now documented on City website. McConkey has proven she has the resolve, ability and the knowledge to lead at the helm of a city that needs new direction and that needs a new Mayor. McConkey’s vision for Oshawa includes a more responsible and responsive local government, one that respects taxpayer money, that hears what Oshawa citizens want to preserve and want to change.
