Its our last day with American Woman Shooter, Dr.Laura Torres-Reyes. TAWS ~ Laura, what advice would you like to share with other women shooters? Laura ~ Be courageous! The hardest part of picking up a firearm for the first time is to embrace the concept that you can safely handle it. Whether your goal is concealed carry or competition, you need to become familiar with your firearm. Take a class, go to the range, own responsibility. Once you are comfortable with safely drawing and shooting, go to a match and participate! I often see women on the sidelines who know how to handle their firearm, but are afraid to participate in a match. The reality is, you will only feel comfortable in a match, once you’re IN a match. The only pressure is what you place on yourself. Your goal should be to shoot as accurately as possible regardless of speed. The shooting community is very generous, so even if you’re alone, and the only women at a range, feel free to ask questions. TAWS ~ Do you have a motto? Laura ~ Yes. Prior to my mental run through of a stage, I close my eyes and say to myself “you own this!” (I learned from fellow shooter Steve Moysey) After the stage, if I’ve met my goal of shooting it as planned, I say to myself “that is just like me!” (I learned from Pro shooter Gordon Carrell) If it doesn’t go as planned, I sing to myself “let it go, let it go!” (I learned from the movie Frozen) So, if you see me on the range talking or singing to myself, you’ll know that I’m not totally crazy! TAWS ~ That was wonderful advice. The number one thing I see is a womans fear subside once she truly learns the operation of her firearm. Its true youll never feel comfortable in a match, unless you do matches. We SO appreciate you taking the time to share with us! Keep up the straight shooting!
