Its possible for lies to be inherited; that is, for us to believe - TopicsExpress

Its possible for lies to be inherited; that is, for us to believe a thing just because our father and grandfather did. Jeremiah 16 refers to todays gathering of the Jews to their own land as greater than their exodus from Egypt under Moses. Verse 19 says, the Gentiles shall come to [the LORD] from the ends of the earth and say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanities, and things wherein is no profit.” Verse 20 makes it clear that the lies they inherited would be idols – dumb substitutes for the true and living God. Should we accept that a thing is true just because others say so? Why should we accept an assertion about the Bible, even one made by a person we respect, without proving it to be true scripturally? It’s not always easy to accept that some things we’ve believed are unscriptural, but personal integrity surely requires that we search out these things for ourselves; that its better to discover the truth now rather than later. We believe our natural and ecclesiastical fathers because we think they must know, but sadly that isn’t always so. Many religious cults came into being after someone saw that things churches taught were incorrect. (They then added their own errors.) You may protest, But I know Im right about what I believe! Yes, you may well be on some things, but remember, even a stopped clock is right twice daily. There are some things we may have inherited – a father’s idiosyncrasies, a grandfather’s inconsistencies -- but inherited lies in the form of doctrines are a lot easier to deal with, that is, if we think the Gospel Truth is worth pursuing.
