Its sad that the NYC council is unwilling to allow for any creativity and innovation to help needy children through NYCs Public school system. Children who have, for generations, been underserved by the NYC public school system - the most expensive in the nation. Are charter schools perfect? nah. There have been a number of failures. but at the same time, there have been significant numbers of successes - successes that parents want for their children so much that there are waiting lists to get into many charters schools that are ridiculously long. Opponents of these schools continue to claim that resources are being taken away from the traditional public schools system to fund these schools, but nothing of the sort is occurring and, to the contrary, charter schools, by functioning on less money per child than traditional public schools actually ADD money to the traditional public school system. I fear that by the time these union-bought progressives get their hands around the necks of innovation and the department of education, that the promising charter school experiment will be shut down for good in NYC... nypost/2014/07/31/stop-approving-charter-schools-suny-city-council/
