Its said that during flood the tiger and goat amicably share the same boat. Thats exactly seem to be happening in Kashmir which just witnessed historic floods in an unprecedented scale. On September 3rd the region was short by 30 cm of rain, reeling under draught. In next couple of days it received more than 50 cm of rain leading to flash floods, typical of hilly regions. Nouveau constructions have clogged the natural outlets contributing to the clogging of the valley with rising waters. It was a disaster waiting to happen, partly man made. Flood which usually comes to the Kashmiris in form of tourists during summer came literally to them like a bolt from the blue. Barring a few dilettante this crisis has brought out camaraderie rarely seen before. Our Army has done heckuva job earning brownie points from their usual bette noires from the Kashmir valley. Otherwise one needs to put a gun on a Kashmiris head to make him praise the Indian Army. Even politicians in opposition like the perennial critics Ghulam Nabi Azad and Digvijay Singh who lose no opportunity at firing salvos at center have praised its rescue and relief operation. Parochial communal difference is forgotten, at least temporarily. But the real test comes when the flood subsides. Both tiger and goat will come out of the boat and so also their overriding animal instinct. Public memory is very short. Everything could be back to square one all over again.
