Its that time! You begin classes tomorrow, so I must turn my attention to next years class. You guys have been a fantastic group, and I know you will love DePaul! Questions can be directed to Ziena Clarkson Miller. Ill leave you with my 10 Tips for Starting College, and be sure to say hi if you see me on campus! Take care! *10 Tips from Anna:* 1. Introduce yourself to everyone, and remember their names. You will learn a lot of new names this week, so my best trick is to write them down. Yes, it sounds silly, but something as simple as on my left = Sasha scribbled in your notebook can save for awkwardness later when you forget their name and they remember yours. 2. Dont sit in the back if you can avoid it. Its not as cool as it was in high school. Extra tip: if you have a classes back to back, sit near the door for a faster escape. 3. Always have a #2 pencil, pen, and paper even if you are using a laptop. 4. Take a picture. Fine, so Im sentimental, but you will appreciate a snapshot of your first day when youre ancient like me. (Ancient meaning a senior.) 5. Think of a unique fact about yourself right now. You will be asked by lots of professors to state your name and something interesting about yourself. Dont be boring - you want your professor to remember you, so come armed with a cool (and truthful) fact about yourself. 6. When possible, get to class 10 minutes early this first week to meet people and settle in. Professors understand that you’re still finding your way around, but give yourself extra time to get around. 7. Seating is not assigned, but there is an unspoken rule that everyone sits in the same place as they sat on the first day. I hate this rule, and I break it all the time. Dont feel like you have to sit in the same place because everyone else is. 8. Take notes, even of the class guidelines. Nobody ever regretted having thorough notes. 9. If you need to leave the room, you do not need to ask. Its awkward if you do. Trust me. Also, silence your phones. C’mon people. 10. YOURE IN COLLEGE. YOURE IN COLLEGE. YOURE IN COLLEGE!!!! Enjoy it. Take a second to look at where you are, see the awesome people around you, and soak in the fact that you got yourself to this point. Its a big deal, so celebrate it!
