Its that time of the week.. its CORE time! This weeks featured exercise is the SIDE PLANK. This exercise works the entire circumference of the core muscles, particularly the ones hidden under the obliques (the side abdominals). Furthermore, the side plank strengthens a generally weak muscle in the external lower back area, specifically the quadratus lumborum. For this reason regularly performing the side plank will reduce the risk of lower back pain. To perform this exercise, lie on your side and drive your body up through your elbow and forearm. Your elbow should be positioned under your shoulder. While you tighten up your abdominals/core raise your hips until your body forms a straight line from your ankles to your head. The goal is to stay in this fixed position with a tight core for the maximum amount of time while maintaining a relaxed breathing pattern. When your hips start to sink, go back to the starting position and rest.
