Its the birthday of Karlheinz Stockhausen, who was born in 1928 in Kerpen, Germany. Stockhausen studied music in Darmstadt and Paris. Dissatisfied with his conventional music education, he joined the Electronic Music Studio of Northwest German Broadcasting in 1953. He also studied phonetics, acoustics and information theory with physicist Werner Meyer-Eppler at the University of Bonn. Stockhausen went on to become one of the foremost postwar composers. His works, notably the ones that feature electronics, influenced not only his fellow classical composers, but also jazz musicians, such as Miles Davis, and rock musicians, such as Björk. Stockhausen died in 2007.
