Its the evening before Americas truly great invention, a national day set aside for being thankful and for gathering people we admire and love around a table groaning with plenty and prosperity and things that belonged to our mothers and fathers. Its not a day of giving gifts -- thats Christmas. Its not a day for firecrackers -- thats the Fourth of July. Theres a lot of remembrance and treasured memories, but thats more appropriate for Memorial Day or Veterans Day. Its just a day in the growing winters gloom when we build literal and figurative fires, and warmly enjoy people and food and the assurance that all things are possible if we could remember what is basic and just and fair. Today, my wish for you is that all that you are thankful for brings you comfort and solace and a desire to help those who have so much less than you. As I grow older, I find that I regard less kindly the more of material things because my heart aches for the less that is the people I love, respect, and wish to be proud of me -- and time takes them away. Be thankful for those who love you.
