Its the little things that fill me up the most and strengthen my relationship with Christ. As much as I would love to be Dr. Torres, world famous pediatric hematologist and oncologist, I know now that I dont have to be. I will probably never become anything greater than just JT, Jaimito, or Jaime, and Im ok with that now. I can still serve God with my lumpy and scarred hands. I dont need two functioning ears to listen, just one functioning heart. The same hands my idols and role models, Drs. Benjamin S. Carson, MD and Alfredo Quiñones, MD, used to remove tumors and cancers from the brains of impoverished and underserved urban youth and migrant agriculture laborers are the very same hands I can continue to use to embrace strangers and acquaintances alike as brothers and sisters. I will probably never be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, nor do I expect my life story to earn me the Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction. To be completely honest, I am completely fine and at peace with this realization. Because, though it took me some time to feel at peace with this understanding, and with no intention of disregarding these awards and the people who merit them, these prizes are of this world and not of the persons theyve been awarded. What I mean to say is that the real prize, the true merit of the individual and his character, must come from himself, and that is the result of all the supposedly indistinguishable little things all summed together that one does in ones life for benefit of others without the expectation of being rewarded beyond the feelings of satisfaction one earns from doing what The Lord commands of him. That is one prize I have all the reason in the world to believe I shall earn in Gods time. All in Gods time.
