Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly give superb performances in this fictionalized account of the famous Scopes Monkey Trail that took place in Tennessee back in 1925. John T. Scopes was a substitute high school teacher who defied what was known as the Butler Act, which banned the teaching of human evolution in any publicly funded classroom in Tennessee. While the trail was in some ways orchestrated to bring light to the archaic Butler Act, its impact can be still felt today. In a strange bit of irony, while Biblical creationism is now forbidden in the public classroom, there are still legions of fanatical believers who deny the science of human evolution.
