Its the weekend again and I am coming back home! One week ago I returned to Raleigh from St. Petersburg, Florida, and today I will be returning from Plymouth, Michigan. It has been quite an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas break, but it is time to get back to normal life. The drive home today is going to be nice for those not driving, but Im going to take the first leg or two of the trip, and its going to be wet. Once we start getting our lifting mechanisms going this morning, there will be precipitation or wintry precipitation along our path home. It should be clear in Michigan since we are leaving early. It may be snowing in Ohio, raining in West Virginia, raining in Virginia, and raining in NC. Currently winter weather advisories and winter weather warnings are in effect for almost the top half of the United States dipping down into the central midwest and Texas and New Mexico. If those of you in Raleigh havent already experienced it, it is going to be raining today. Maybe not all day with chances diminishing into the overnight hours, but it will be raining for a good portion of the day with temperatures reaching a high of around 50 today and hovering there overnight before rising again into the mid 70s tomorrow. Bring your rain gear to the 2015 ACC opener against Pitt tonight! Its a little bit of an interesting situation going on right now but basically the 500 mb and 300 mb jet streams are creating a path for the warm gulf air to push up into the mountains and a classic Cold Air Damming (CAD) case is occurring with the central low pressure center right over Florida and the High centered over the Great Lakes/New England States. What we will experience tomorrow will be the warm coastal front off of the central Low, but instead of eroding the CAD in this case it will enhance the temperature gradient and strengthen it allowing us to receive the much cooler temperatures over the couple of days following.
