Its the worlds most eaten meat yet its wreaking havoc in the Mallee. Goats have reached plague proportions and are stripping pastoral land of feed and water throughout south west New South Wales. Now, farmers are hoping to turn this feral pest into a profitable export. NSW Farmers Association Wentworth branch chairman Jim Maynard says there are so many goats that farmers are mustering and trucking them away in the tens of thousands. Ive heard of one property north of Pooncarie that mustered approximately 27,000 goats off it, he said. It is a big property but that is the most I have heard of although I have seen huge numbers mustered between Wentworth and Broken Hill. (Goats) can be quite a lucrative income. Australia is the worlds largest exporter of goat meat, with the US and Taiwan the biggest markets. Meat and Livestock Australia figures estimate goat meat exports are worth almost $150 million annually, with another $10 million coming from live exports. abc.net.au/news/2014-01-28/mallee-goat-exports/5222838
