Its time for Serero to shine in a Bafana jersey 2014-11-14 THULANI Serero was once dubbed the Lionel Messi of South Africa by Gordon Igesund. But hes not quite weaved his magic in a Bafana Bafana jersey. His game has developed at Ajax Amsterdam and he has grown to become one of coach Frank de Boers key players in midfield. Serero, however, has repeatedly failed to hit the heights at international level due to injuries, indifferent form and a suspected lack of commitment on some occasions. Bafana are yet to win or score a goal at home in this years Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the team will need the playmaker to raise his game at Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow against Sudan. With Andile Jali and Dean Furman most likely to play in deeper roles, Serero will have all the freedom to get forward and create opportunities for the strikers. But former Bafana midfielder Helman Mkhalele expects more than just creating chances from Serero. He brings in the creativity and he reads the game well, but I think there is room for improvement. He needs to try and get into good areas in the box. He should be scoring more goals as an attacking midfielder. I think he has played well for the national team, but the expectations are very high because he is playing in a top league overseas, Mkhalele said. Phil Masinga, a former Bafana striker, said Serero should not be put under pressure: His performances for Ajax Amsterdam and Bafana are almost similar. He is not the only one who should carry the team. He is a team player and sometimes he has to play according to what the coach requires.
