Its time for a little rant about The Americans. If you are a KGB - TopicsExpress

Its time for a little rant about The Americans. If you are a KGB sleeper agent in the United States and you have been in the United States for nearly 20 years prior to the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, this presumably gaining valuable insights regarding the American way of life, then there is no way on this planet or any other that you are going to think that Alexander Haigs publicly professed lack of knowledge regarding the constitutional line of succession means that Alexander Haig was planning to launch a coup détat. And no, this isnt hindsight talking, seeing as how no one with any knowledge of the American system of government and way of life ever seriously entertained the possibility that Alexander Haig was preparing to launch a coup. Indeed, even if you entertained the thought that Haig was going to try to become generalissimo of the United States, you ought to have first asked yourself self, if Alexander Haig did not try to launch a coup as White House chief of staff during the Watergate crisis, why would he try it now? And self, what makes you think that he would be more successful now, when he is NOT White House chief of staff? To the extent that longstanding KGB sleeper agents in the United States really did think that Haig was setting out to be generalissimo while Ronald Reagan was fighting for his life, its useful to contrast their reaction with that of Stan Beeman, who on the first night after the assassination attempt had no problem saying yeah, the KGB wasnt behind this; John Hinckley just had the hots for Jodie Foster and picked a weird way to show his devotion. I guess being smart and connected to reality helps when youre trying to win a Cold War.
