Its time for me to get back on my favorite soap box, to rant about my favorite pet peeve: Sanctimonious, self-righteous vegans. There are many, many studies showing plants have consciousness, emotion, and sensation. I find it amusing how flippantly (most) vegan activists dismiss this fact. All life is sacred. All organisms we eat -- whether plant or animal -- should be treated with utmost respect and harvested in ways that minimize or eliminate fear and suffering. In the end, every physical being goes through a physical death, and feeds other organisms. Including you and me. Thats not a tragedy, its a miracle! I wholeheartedly support plants based diets, and wholeheartedly oppose the careless, irresponsible, and cruel ways that animals and plants are factory farmed. I am not a vegan; but as much as possible, I try to get my (small quantities) of animal protien (mostly egg and sheep/goat cheese & yogurt) from either local farmers whose methods I know to be respectful of their critters, or from animals I care for myself. I know their names. They recognize me. I have eaten friends. I am grateful to them and give thanks and blessing to their souls with every bite. When I die, I would be honored to have some carnivorous animal I knew in life eat my body. I take personal responsibility for the health, happiness, and well being of the animals who feed me (Rosa Parks, Judy Dench, and Empress Jade are the names of the hens who supply my breakfast every morning), and look to see that they are being raised in a way that also sustains and regenerates the environment. But vegans are constanly telling me Im a slaver and a murderer and an environmental pirate, despite the fact that Ive personally dedicated my life to sustainable, holistic agriculture, and to changing the way we relate to the living beings that give us life. I think most vegans are just more interested in justifying their philosophy than they are in making a real difference. And most are certainly more interested in arguing their own views than they are in finding common ground and working together.
