Its time to post my favorites as well as my predictions for this years Academy Awards. In each of the major categories I have ranked them first to last from my personal favorite to least favorite and then Ive offered commentary on who I predict will win, who should win, and who should have been nominated. This is a looooong post, so forgive me. BEST PICTURE 1. Dallas Buyers Club 2. 12 Years A Slave 3. Philomena 4. Gravity 5. Nebraska 6. The Wolf of Wall Street 7. Her 8. American Hustle 9. Captain Phillips Will/Should Win: 12 Years A Slave is likely, and Im not sad about it. Should Have Been Nominated: For me, Saving Mr. Banks was a better film than Hustle and Captain Phillips; and Id say the same about August: Osage County. BEST DIRECTOR 1. Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) 2. Alexander Payne (Nebraska) 3. Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) 4. Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) 5. David O. Russell (American Hustle) Will/Should Win: Alfonso Cuaron made the stretching expanses of outer space feel claustrophobic, and the visual accomplishments he created were astonishing. Should Have Been Nominated: Im okay with this list. BEST ACTOR 1. Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) 2. Bruce Dern (Nebraska) 3. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) 4. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) 5. Christian Bale (American Hustle) Will/Should Win: Matthew McConaughey. His transformation and his performance. Wow. Should Have Been Nominated: Joaquin Phoenix over Christian Bale. BEST ACTRESS 1. Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) 2. Judi Dench (Philomena) 3. Sandra Bullock (Gravity) 4. Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) 5. Amy Adams (American Hustle) Will/Should Win: Cate Blanchett for her exquisite modern day Blanche duBois. Should Have Been Nominated: Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) over Adams inconsistent performance in Hustle. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR 1. Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) 2. Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) 3. Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) 4. Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) 5. Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) Will Win: Jared Leto has been filling his shelves with trophies this awards season, and I suspect he will receive the ultimate here--and his performance is gutsy and deserving. However... Should Win: ...Im still haunted by Michael Fassbenders ridiculously brilliant performance in 12 Years A Slave. I cant get it out of my mind. Should Have Been Nominated: Chris Cooper (August: Osage County); Will Forte (Nebraska); Colin Farrell (Saving Mr. Banks); Tom Hanks (Saving Mr. Banks); Geoffrey Rush (The Book Thief). Id have substituted any of these for Cooper and Hill. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS 1. Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) 2. Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) and Lupita Nyongo (12 Years A Slave) 3. June Squibb (Nebraska) 4. Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) Will Win: Its going to be a toss-up between Lawrence and Nyongo, and seeing as how I loved their performances equally, Ill smile with either. Should Win: Julia Roberts was truly terrific in August: Osage County. I left the theatre thinking she gave the performance of her career and played brilliantly against type. Should Have Been Nominated: Margo Martindale (August: Osage County); Oprah Winfrey (The Butler); Amy Adams (Her). But who do you remove to make room for one of these ladies? This is the only completely satisfying category with a list of should haves waiting in the wings.
