Its very easy to want to look our nose down at people who choose - TopicsExpress

Its very easy to want to look our nose down at people who choose to do shopping on Thanksgiving day and Black Friday when we feel that they choose to shop on the holiday and how we see so many acts of violence stem from the frenzy of sales but I think we should hold our judgement on these individuals until we have put the entire phenomenon into context. These peoples actions is the end result of a culture which has placed material and financial advancement as the ultimate measure of success. To have more means you are a better, smarter, and a contributing member to society. This sounds absurd but we connect being good to wealth and then everyone strives for these markers of wealth to be good. We also see here the institutionalized failure to provide the average person a livable and comfortable wage. Society teases goodness via material goods then fails to put the education or job structures in place to provide for all that demand. Of course people will fight over a few dollars when it means they can finally have the worm on the end of the hook. Dont judge people harshly. They want to live and be happy in societies that say material wealth is happiness. Be angry at the at the systems and culture which breeds this thought. Change this first.
