It’s #NationalBirdDay! Celebrate with us by sharing your Badlands National Park bird pictures with us. A common visitor question is, “What is the black and white bird with the long tail? “ If youve been birding in the park, youve probably seen the black-billed magpie. These social birds are well known throughout the Northwest, even though history. Lewis and Clark first came across the magpie in September 1804 in Chamberlain, SD, and described the “yak yak yak” chirp in their expedition journals. These birds are omnivores, and can be found eating insects off animals, fronts of cars, and can even be seen trying to sneak visitor picnic lunches away from them. Magpies are intelligent birds and take advantage of all Badlands National Park has to offer. (KT) NPS Photos by Lee Mcdowell.
