It’s Sunday…So, I’ve been reading up on ‘Common Core’ and I think we are fighting the wrong battle. The idea of ‘standards’ is good the problem is how local school districts implement those standards. I have seen information on the internet from different areas of the U.S. that want to make Karl Marx out to be a good guy, an economist. Well, Karl Marx was a leach. He married for money and sponged off of his wife because the welfare system was not so well developed at the time. In these days and times he would probably have moved to Chicago so he could have palled around with Bill and Barack and written his rants against capitalism while teaching some journalism class at the university. I believe that everyone who is paying school taxes has a right to know what is going on in the schools that they fund…you not only have a right, you have an obligation! Some of the ‘local’ stuff I read about teaching math indicated that it was for kids in kindergarten. I felt as though it had been written by kids in kindergarten. Go have a look and tell me if you can understand why teaching a five year old that 2 plus 3 equals 5 should in anyway involve the number 10. One of the curriculums I saw dealt with showing the “relationship of 2 to ten and three to 10 in order to derive 5.” Really. Was this written by someone trying to show how smart they were…or how stupid they were? And history…how many of you knew that Mikhail Gorbachev was the humanitarian who ‘out of the goodness of his heart’ tore down the Berlin Wall with no prodding from Ronald Reagan. I can hardly wait to be further enlightened by people who do not have a clue. Folks, the biggest failure of our school system was letting people go to a university and get a degree in school administration without ever being a teacher. We should be teaching teachers how to be administrators instead of allowing professional ‘bean counters’ to take over our school system. (Can I get an ‘Amen’?) I have to stop now. Jo was just playing a clip of Nancy Pelosi explaining how ‘we have to pass this law in order to find out what is in it’ and I feel the ‘stupid’ trying to get into my head…I have to go get my tinfoil hat. Nuff said! (please share)
